Oct 1, 2016 Sometimes referred to as offshore platforms or oil rigs (which is to the ocean bed, platforms built on artificial islands and floating platforms. An oil platform, offshore platform, or offshore drilling rig is a large structure with facilities for well drilling to explore, extract, store, and process petroleum and natural gas that lies in rock formations beneath the seabed. Many oil platforms will also contain facilities to accommodate their workforce. In that latter case, you get underwater oil and offshore oil rigs. In the “middle” of the ocean, the seafloor is primarily basaltic crust generated by volcanic activity at the mid-ocean ridge. There are a number of different types of 'oil rigs' in the ocean. In relatively shallow water (less than 200 feet, or so) we can use 'jack up rigs'. These are triangular shaped floating vessels with long legs on the three corners. When the rig is where we want it to be, Oil rigs are a necessary tool in the exploration, extraction and refinement of oil deposits both on land and at sea. If you live in a coastal city, particularly a city that contains oil refineries, you may be able to see oil rigs from the shore of your local beach. Oil rigs are built to withstand decades at sea – taking them apart is as tough as they are March 3, 2016 7.37am EST Richard Neilson , University of Aberdeen

Conditions offshore are harsh and variable. As such, the generators that are produced to be used on oil rigs must be built with materials and coatings that can

Anatomy of an Offshore Oil Rig Shell wants to use the Kulluk, an ice-ready rig built in 1983, to explore the enormous oil and gas reserves off Alaska's north coast. We visited the rig just weeks A typical oil platform is built from concrete and steel, and can not only drill for oil, but also can process and refine the oil. Jack-up rigs extend long legs to the bottom of the sea floor to provide stability to the structure. The Jack-up is limited by the depth of water in which it can operate. The last three -- drill ships, flotels and mobile storage units -- are meant as temporary oil extraction structures when a larger oil rig cannot be used.
