the oil surge relay is connected in between oltc chamber and oltc conservator.its is used for protection for oltc. Oil surge relay responds only by rate of rise pressure resulting from internal arcing. When rate of rise pressure oil cross certain value then alarm and trip contacts operate. A separation should be arranged such that the oil in OLTC chamber and transformer chamber should not be mixed together as shown in below fig. A sudden pressure surge in the oil compresses the bellows and forces the air within to move a diaphragm. The moving diaphragm actuates a switch that initiates tripping of the transformer. This relay responds only if oil flow occurs from the on-load tap-changer head to the oil conservator. If this happens, the flow vane (2/D) which has 2 magnets (2/E) switches the reed (2/F). The surge of oil caused by a heavy internal fault bursts the disk and allows the oil to discharge rapidly. Relieving and limiting the pressure rise prevent explosive rupture of the tank and consequent fire. Also, if used, the separate tap changer oil enclosure can be fitted with a pressure relief device.

How it protect the OLTC?.. THE OIL SURGE RELAY IS CONNECTED IN BETWEEN OLTC CHAMBER AND CONSERVATOR (SEPARATE FOR FOR OLTC) WITH BREATHER. A SEPAATION SHOULD BE ARRANGE SUCH THAT THE OIL IN OLTC CHAMBER AND TRANSFORMER CHAMBER SHOULD NOT BE MIXED TOGETHER.
