In simple language, open interest analysis helps a trader to understand the market scenario by only showing a number of futures contracts that have been changed hand during the market hours. It is mostly used by the Future and options contract traders. Open Interest is the total number of outstanding contracts that are held by market participants at the end of each day. Where volume measures the pressure or intensity behind a price trend, open interest measures the flow of money into the futures market. For each seller of a futures contract there must be a buyer of that contract. Open interest is one variable that many futures traders use in their analysis of the markets used in conjunction with other analysis to support trade decisions. Large changes in open interest can be an indicator when certain participants are entering or leaving the market and may give clues to market direction. So, OPEN INTEREST means POSITIONS of TRADERS which are OUTSTANDING and not yet squared off. There are only two type of positions that a trader can take in the market, LONG & SHORT. Now, since for every LONG there is a SHORT and for every SHORT there is a LONG, so we don’t count OI as LONG + SHORT but either TOTAL LONGS or TOTAL SHORTS.
