Silver-exchanged Zeolite is generally immediately available in most volumes. High purity, submicron and nanopowder forms may be considered. For silver ion-exchange, 1.5 g zeolite Na-LTA powder was added into 100 ml AgNO 3 ethanol solution (with AgNO 3 concentration of 0.05 mol/L), and then the mixture was stirred for 4 h at 50 °C in a temperature-controlled water bath. After ion-exchange, the zeolite Ag-LTA powder was filtered and washed with ethanol to remove all the unreacted cations, and then it was dried under nitrogen at 110 °C over night for characterization. The right bright light: Silver‐exchanged zeolite 3A crystals show remarkable luminescent properties. Upon irradiation with high‐power UV light, a strong photoactivation process takes place which results in an emission increase of up to two orders of magnitude (see picture). The crystals of interest—or even small domains within one crystal—can be selectively activated by using a confocal microscope. A series of silver-exchanged zeolite NaY (ZS) was first prepared by adding 1.0 g of commercial zeolite NaY CBV 100 (Zeolyst International) to 50 mL of silver nitrate (AgNO 3) (Merck) at different concentrations based on 25, 50, 100 and 200% of the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the zeolite NaY (CEC: 255 meq/100 g). Because of their high ion exchange capacity, silver exchanged LTA (Ag-LTA) zeolites can be incorporated in polymeric materials as antibacterial agents for various purposes such as preventing biofouling in water treatment membranes due to the formation of microorganisms like bacteria, algae.
