Chart: US Stock Market Leverage. With the latest monthly margin debt stats from FINRA just out it's worth taking a look the chart of aggregated stock market leverage. The chart shows the combination of net margin debt, net leveraged ETF AUM, and net speculative futures positioning, all in nominal terms, and the sum total is about US$400 billion. Trading using leverage allows traders to trade markets that would otherwise be unavailable and allows them to trade more contracts (or shares, forex lots, etc.) than they would otherwise be able to afford. Trading using leverage does not is increase the risk of a trade; it is the same amount of risk as using cash. But one type of stock-market leverage is measured: “margin debt” – the amount individual and institutional investors borrow from their brokers against their portfolios. Lots of ways to gain leverage. Using margin is the simplest version. You can use leveraged ETFs, which can give you 3x, 4x the returns of a normal stock ETF. Easier still to use options, which can often give you a 4x-6x leverage against normal stocks for "reasonable" in the money calls or puts. Trading using leverage is trading on credit by depositing a small amount of cash and then borrowing a more substantial amount of cash. For example, a trade on the EUR futures market has a contract value of $125,000, but by using leverage, the same trade can be made with approximately $6,000 in cash.
