The global cost for all US imported crude oil purchases fell -35.6% since 2014 but increased 17% from 2017 to 2018. The U.S. will start exporting more energy products than it imports next year, the U.S. Energy Information Administration says. The country has been a net importer of energy since 1953, according to The United States became a net oil exporter for the first time in 75 years, or so they say.   While the U.S. may indeed be exporting more petroleum than it imports from time to time, there’s a dirty little secret behind the data. US oil trade Despite being the largest oil producer in the world, the United States imports oil to meet its energy needs. In 2018, the US exported ~2.8 billion barrels of crude oil and petroleum The U.S. continues to import and export crude oil because the viscosity of oil (measured by its API gravity) being light or heavy and its sulfur content being low (sweet) or high (sour) largely determine the processes needed to refine it into fuel and other products.
